Garden room air conditioning: sizing for glass, sun and winter

How to choose wall-mounted air conditioning for a Wirral garden room, including glazing, solar gain, insulation, heating and outdoor-unit siting.

Short answer

A garden room should be sized from its heat gains and heat losses, not floor area alone. Glazing direction, roof build-up, shading, air leakage and equipment can make two rooms of identical size behave very differently. A reversible wall split can cool in summer and heat in winter, but its output and low-temperature performance must be checked against the actual structure.

The outdoor unit needs manufacturer clearances, stable support, service access and unobstructed airflow. Its position also needs a noise, appearance and planning check. A guard may help where the unit is exposed to accidental knocks, but it must not restrict air or maintenance access and remains an opt-in extra.
