Air conditioning running costs: what actually changes the bill?
Understand wall-split air conditioning running costs without misleading fixed-price claims, including efficiency, settings, room load and maintenance.
Running cost equals the electricity used multiplied by the tariff paid. A wall split does not draw its nominal cooling-output figure from the socket continuously: inverter systems modulate as the room approaches temperature. A room-specific maintaining range can therefore be useful, but one universal hourly figure is not honest because weather, heat gain, set point, insulation and tariff all change the result.

How the quote estimate works
Each current audited catalogue result combines the room load calculated from the survey with that model’s published SEER for cooling and SCOP for heating. Those seasonal measures include part-load performance, which makes them more useful than multiplying nominal output by an electricity price. If a future admin-added model has not yet had its SEER and SCOP audited, its card is explicitly labelled as an energy-label estimate and uses a broad rating-band value until model data is verified.
The displayed range models the system maintaining a settled room at roughly 35–65% of the calculated design cooling load and 40–75% of the heating load. Those are transparent estimating bands, not manufacturer guarantees. The first hour, very hot or cold weather, open doors and windows, or an aggressive set point can cost more.

The settings with the greatest influence
Trying to make a room extremely cold increases the temperature difference the system must maintain. A comfortable, moderate set point with doors and windows closed is usually more sensible than maximum cooling followed by switching the unit off and allowing the room to rebound.
Timers and app schedules can prevent unnecessary operation. Fan-only mode moves air but does not provide compressor cooling. Dry mode can improve comfort in humid conditions, though its behaviour varies by model and it is not a substitute for correcting a moisture problem.
Room and installation factors
Solar gain through glass, weak insulation, air leakage, cooking, computers and occupancy add load. Outdoor and indoor units also need their specified clearances. Restricted airflow makes the system work harder and can reduce performance.
A correct refrigerant circuit, sound insulation, proper evacuation, clean coils and clear drainage are installation and maintenance fundamentals. Efficiency labels cannot compensate for poor commissioning.
Simple owner care
Check washable filters regularly during heavy use and clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep furniture and curtains away from the indoor air paths, and keep leaves and stored items away from the outdoor unit.
If performance changes, ice forms, water appears indoors or a fault code persists, arrange a qualified check. Repeated resets can hide a developing problem. Work that opens the refrigerant circuit requires the correct F-gas qualification.

Does a 2.5 kW air conditioner use 2.5 kW of electricity?
Not normally. The 2.5 kW label usually describes nominal cooling output. Electrical input is lower and varies as an inverter system modulates.
Is it cheaper to leave air conditioning on all day?
There is no universal answer. Usage pattern, heat gain, set point and building fabric matter. Avoid cooling an empty room unnecessarily and use schedules suited to actual occupancy.
Do dirty filters increase running costs?
Restricted airflow can reduce performance and make the system work harder. Filters should be checked and cleaned in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
